How to Test Smoke Detectors

Test Your Smoke Detector Every Month!

We recommended that you check the manufacturer's instructions for the proper method to test your smoke alarm.

Generally, most battery-powered and hardwired smoke alarms can be tested in a few quick and easy steps:

  1. Notify family members that you will be testing the smoke detectors. Smoke alarms emit a high-pitched noise that may frighten young children (and animals).
  2. Have someone stand at the farthest point away from the alarm to make sure that the sound emitted is loud enough to be heard in that area.
  3. Press and hold the test button on the smoke detector. It may take a few seconds to begin. A very loud, ear-piercing siren should occur. If the sound is weak or nonexistent, replace your batteries.

If the test fails, replace the batteries and repeat the test. If the unit still does not react, or it's a hardwired unit, you may need to replace the device.
